Library serves as a Warming Center
The Sandwich Public Library is one of your community's local warming centers during periods of extreme cold.
A warming center is a short-term emergency shelter that operates when temperatures or a combination of precipitation, wind chill, wind and temperature become dangerously inclement. Their paramount purpose is the prevention of death and injury from exposure to the elements.
Cold Weather Tips:
- Layer up! Wear a hat and gloves as well to maintain body temperature.
- Keep all pets indoors.
- If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away – things such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs.
- Before bed, turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room.
- Run water at a trickle to keep your pipes from freezing.
- Do NOT use a stove or oven to heat your home.

The Sandwich Public Library is one of your community's local cooling centers during periods of extreme heat.
A cooling center is an air-conditioned public facility where members of the community can go to find relief from extreme heat. Cooling centers are meant to prevent hypothermia caused by heat, humidity, and poor air quality and also provide shelter, water, and restrooms.
Hot Weather Tips:
- Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water and natural juices. Avoid alcohol, coffee, and soda.
- Avoid extreme temperature changes.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light colored clothing.
- Do not leave anyone or any animal in a parked car for any extended amount of time.
- If you do not have air conditioning, keep shades drawn and blinds closed with your windows slightly open.
- Check on animal frequently to make sure they are not overheating.
- Check on relatives, friends, and neighbors.
